The State Islamic College Zawiyah Cot Kala Langsa established in 1980 as a response toward Islamic History Conference held in Pertamina Rantau, Kuala Simpang. The name derived from one of the famous higher institution in Bayeum, South east Asia in the fourth century.
At first, this institution establish in kind of Islamic Institution with three Faculties. The faculties are Tarbiyah, Syari’ah, and Dakwah. The first class began on October, 14, 1980 with officially launched two faculties. Faculties of Tarbiyah offer Islamic Education programme and in Dakwah Faculty offer Islamic communication department in diploma degree. In 1981, the foundation established with official document no 7 on July, 20. In 1982, the minister of religious affair, H. Alamsyah Ratu Perwira, officially announced the department of religious affair in Aceh Province. Through directorate general of Islamic Institution degrees no: Kep/E/III/PP.00.2/1303/83 on April, 16 1983 the IAI Zawiyah Cot Kala officially registered. Furthermore, in 1988, through the minister of religious affair degrees No : 219 on December, 1, 1988 IAI Zawiyah Cotkala registered with bachelor program. Nine years later, IAI Zawiyah Cot kala become STAI (State Islamic College).
Through the years of academic process in this Institution, the progress can be seen from the mounting of the students registered every year, the increasing of the teaching staff, and other aspects in this college. That’s why since 2000, the institution can increase the status of the institution with Decree of the Director General of Institutional Development of Islamic Religious Affairs Department Republic of Indonesia No: E/36/2000 on March, 20, 2000. In 2001, it established two programs, the first one is diploma for elementary teacher education (PGMI) and the second program is diploma for Islamic Education Teacher (GPAI).
In 2006, the more encouraging developments came out. Operationally, it explained in Presidential Decree No. 106 of 2006 Date of December 28, 2006 about Establishment of the State Islamic College (STAIN) Cot Zawiyah Kala Langsa signed by the President of the Republic of Indonesia Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
In addition, redirects status of the State Islamic College of Zawiyah Cot Kala Langsa will positively affect the development of the Islamic sciences in general. It will also encourage national solidarity and strengthen the integrity of the nation, because of the presence of Islamic education institution are dedicated himself to the interests of the nation and religion. Moreover, it's also going to construct nationalization of pride among the Muslims of Aceh as a positive thing for creating conflict resolution and sustainable peace in Aceh.
